What Is CBCT?

CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is advanced 3D dental imaging that shows teeth, bone, nerves, sinuses, and jaw joints in remarkable detail.

Unlike traditional 2D X-rays, CBCT eliminates distortion and overlapping structures, helping us see exactly what’s happening beneath the surface.

👉 Why it matters: clearer diagnosis, safer treatment planning, fewer surprises during procedures, and typically fewer appointments.

Why In-House CBCT Matters

  • Same-day answers: Scan and review results during the same visit—no external referrals or delays.
  • More precise treatment: Millimeter-level measurements for tooth roots, bone quality, and nerve locations.
  • Lower dose protocols: Modern CBCT uses optimized, focused fields of view to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
  • Better experience: Faster diagnoses and efficient care plans reduce repeat visits.

CBCT for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can hide important details on 2D X-rays. CBCT helps us:

  • Map the exact position of wisdom teeth relative to the second molar, sinus, and mandibular nerve.
  • Assess root shape and curvature to reduce risk to nearby structures.
  • Plan minimally invasive approaches to protect healthy bone and gum tissue.
  • Anticipate complications so your appointment is smoother and safer.

Note: We always complete a consultation first. If you have facial swelling or severe pain, call us for guidance.

CBCT for Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Persistent tooth pain, complex root anatomy, or suspected fractures often need 3D evaluation. CBCT can:

  • Reveal hidden canals (e.g., MB2 in upper molars) and unusual root shapes.
  • Differentiate between cracks, missed canals, and other causes of persistent symptoms.
  • Pinpoint lesions and measure their extent to guide treatment or retreatment decisions.
  • Improve outcomes by allowing more targeted, conservative treatment.

CBCT for Dental Implants

Success begins with precise planning. With CBCT we can:

  • Measure bone height, width, and density to confirm implant feasibility.
  • Locate nerves and sinuses to plan safe implant positioning.
  • Design guided surgery (when indicated) for accurate placement and quicker healing.
  • Visualize aesthetics and function before treatment begins.

Safety & Radiation

CBCT uses a cone-shaped beam and focused scan area to capture only what’s needed.

We tailor the field of view and settings to the clinical question, and we follow ALARA principles (as low as reasonably achievable).

⚠️ If you’re pregnant or think you might be, please tell us so we can discuss timing and alternatives.

What to Expect

  • Quick visit: Most scans take under a minute of actual imaging time.
  • Comfortable positioning: You’ll stand or sit while the scanner rotates around your head.

FAQs: CBCT at Happy Family Dental Centre

Is CBCT safe?
Yes. We use focused, low-dose protocols and only scan when it meaningfully improves diagnosis or safety.

How is CBCT different from a panoramic X-ray?
A pano is 2D and can hide important details. CBCT is 3D, allowing precise measurements and clear views of nerves, roots, sinuses, and bone.

Do I always need a CBCT?
Not always. Dr. Sood recommends CBCT when 3D detail will change the diagnosis, plan, or safety of your treatment.

Will my insurance cover it?
Many plans provide some coverage when medically necessary. We’ll submit on your behalf and direct bill to insurance where possible.

How long does the scan take?
The scan itself is typically under a minute; your total appointment time is longer to allow positioning and reviewing results.

Can I get a copy of my scan?
Yes—on request, we can provide images or a report for your records or for referral purposes.

I’m pregnant—should I have a CBCT?
Please let us know. We’ll weigh urgency and consider alternatives or timing adjustments.

Ready for Clarity?

If you’re considering wisdom tooth extraction, root canal treatment, or dental implants, an in-house CBCT scan can give us the full picture—literally.
